Ogun Assembly asks commissioner-nominees to boost revenue

The Ogun State House of Assembly screened 18 commissioner-nominees on Wednesday and urged them to evolve creative means of consolidating on the rebuilding mission of the state government to further improve on the living conditions of the people of the state by enhancing government revenue.

The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, gave this plea after the commissioner-nominees had been screened inside the Assembly complex.

During the exercise, which lasted for six hours, all the nominees‎ were asked various questions ranging from their professional competence, to experiences and capacity to serve the state.

The governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, had sent the list of the commissioner-nominees to the Assembly last Friday for screening.

Adekunbi stressed the need to promote mutual interdependence of the legislative and executive arms in promoting good governance.

He said, “The screening exercise is for us to legitimise and ensure the quality assurance of those who will manage the affairs of the state.

“We hope that after their confirmation, they will hit the ground running.

“There is the need for the commissioner-nominees to device strategic means of revenue generation for the funding of government policies and programmes for improved service delivery.”

The Speaker explained that they must complement the governor’s efforts at their various ministries when confirmed and appointed, in order to consolidate on the achievements recorded in the first term of the incumbent administration.

Among the nominees are five former commissioners, who served with the governor in his first term.
