Ondo workers suspend warning strike

Civil servants in Ondo State have suspended their two-day warning strike, which they embarked upon on Wednesday to press home their demand for the payment of their two months salaries arrears by the state government.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting of the organised labour in Akure on Thursday, the Chairman of the state Joint Negotiating Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, Comrade Sunday Adeleye, said the union took the decision following the intervention of labour leaders in the country.

Adeleye, however, gave some conditions to the government, which included payment of salaries of the workers in full by Wednesday, October 7, 2015, and reinstatement of some workers, whose names had allegedly been removed from the payment vouchers of the civil service during the last verification exercise.

He said the failure of the state government to do this might lead to the resumption of the industrial action.

He alleged that about 500 names of workers were allegedly removed from the vouchers of state Teaching Service Commission, Universal Basic Education Board and core civil service during the recent verification exercise.

“Any worker found guilty of any offence should be made to face the music with due process rather than unjustly removing their names from the payment voucher.

“All salaries arrears be paid in full by Wednesday, that is, July, August and September must be paid in full by Wednesday October 7, 2015,” Adeleye insisted.

He warned the government against victimisation of any member of the unions ,who had played one role or the other during the struggle, saying the strike did not have any political undertone.

“All of us are the stakeholders in the government of this state.

“On the behalf of JNC, I hereby direct all the workers in Ondo State to resume work tomorrow (Friday). The government should try and reason with us and yield to our demand. I also want to tell the government that we are not politically motivated by any individual to embark on strike,” he stressed.
