WHO Celebrates Okonjo-Iweala

World Health Organization (WHO) has commended the appointment of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the chairman-elect of the board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

The World Health Organization has applauded her appointment saying that, she will bring her 33 years in development and financial expertise to bear on the Gavi Board at a critical period where there is urgent need for immunization vaccines in developing countries.

The former finance minister in Nigeria would be taking over from Dagfinn Høybråten, who also a former Norwegian Minister of Health and current Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Okonjo-Iweala is set to work closely with Dr. Flavia Bustreo,WHO assistant Director-General for Family, Women’s and Children’s Health, and also Vice Chair of Gavi.

Gavi in the year 2000 save seven million children from dying by supporting the immunization of more than half a billion children and WHO is a key partner of the organisation.

The organisation, a public-private partnership, was formed in 2000 with the aim to arrest global inequities in access to vaccines.

The apex health organisation has warned the 2015 target of equitable distribution of vaccines was only met in one out of the six key vaccination targets adding that Gavi has been able to bridge this gap.

Also congratulating Ngozi-Iweala, Global Fund – a key partner to Gavi said that Okonjo-Iweala appointment is a welcomed development.

The organisation said that they are expecting the former minister to bring her fiscal management skill to bear on the new job with Gavi.

Global Fund added that it will collaborate with Gavi in joint work around systems for health, women’s and girl’s health.
