Youths protest power outage in Ekiti

Youths in Ijan Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government Area, on Monday protested against nine months power outage, issuing a seven day ultimatum to Benin Electricity Distribution Company to restore power.
The aggrieved youths blocked the Ado-Ijan-Ikare highway and disrupted free flow of traffics for several hours.
The rampaging youths, who carried placards of various inscription were said to have visited the palace of Onijan, Oba Samuel Fadahunsi.
They threatened a legal action against BEDC on expiration of the seven-day ultimatum.

Oba Fadahunsi while receiving the youths pleaded for patience, describing the power outage in the community as very embarrassing.
The Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Kola Oluwawole, in a statement by his Special Assistant (Media), Stephen Gbadamosi, asked BEDC to ensure that communities in the state enjoyed electricity.
He lamented that it was becoming a daily occurrence for youths to protest lack of electricity, due to the lackadaisical attitude of the company.

He said, “It is said that one can recall that not quite two months ago, the BEDC caused the people of Aramoko-Ekiti, including their monarch, to troop to the streets to protest absence of electricity in the town for months.

“It is a different thing, if people are not willing to pay for services rendered. But when they have fulfilled their obligations, BEDC should reciprocate with provision of the services paid for.

“Electricity is very germane to the development of any community. We as a House of Assembly will not close our eyes to any act aimed at short-changing our people.”
