WHILE NIGERIA IS JAILING GAY FOLKS 14 YEARS, Ireland Becomes First Country to Legalize Gay Marriage by Vote

Ireland has overwhelmingly voted in favor gay marriage, thus making it the first nation to fully legalize it by a national popular vote.

There are roughly 20 other nations where gay marriage is legal nationwide, and earlier today Ireland joined that list. Turnout was estimated at about 60 percent.

The fight for gay marriage put LGBT advocates at odds with the largely Catholic Ireland, where the Roman Catholic Church holds a lot of sway. But that may change, as some priests were going against the church to support the measure.

22 years ago next month, Ireland had officially decriminalized homosexuality, and today’s vote is another sign of big social change.

As of newly reported numbers, 62.3 percent of people voted to legalize gay marriage, with 37.7 percent opposed. In fact, there was only one constituency in the whole of Ireland where the measure was voted down.
