Rochas Okorocha battles Govt. Day School, Katsina, as semifinals hold today

Rochas Okorocha Foundation Secondary School, Ogboko, Imo State will this afternoon at the National Stadium, Lagos, confront Government Day Secondary School, Katsina, in the first semifinal of the All Nigeria secondary Schools Football Championship, also known as NNPC/Shell Cup.

At the Shell Cup semifinals draws held yesterday in Lagos, Rezheight High School of Edo State will meet Government Secondary School, Kano in the second semifinal of the 17-year-old competition.

The final game of the competition will hold on Sunday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Earlier before the draws, a team of coaches from Feyenoord Football Club of Holland, who are currently in Nigeria to train players and coaches, who qualified for the semifinals of the competition, praised Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) for the initiative, saying it would help upcoming players to know what is expected of them if they chose football as career.

One of the coaches, Gido Vida, confessed that the young lads in the competition have shown so much commitment and natural talents, adding, “it has been a great experience for us and I have to salute Shell for helping in the development of talents.”

Nigeria’s former international, Mike Obiku, who is also in the Feyenoord team, noted that the difference between the talents in Nigeria and those in Holland was the facilities enjoyed by the youths in the Netherlands.

“I am happy to be part of this programme since I also started my career here. It is important that we engage some of the coaches and we expect them to impact better knowledge of the game to kids across the country. The Shell Cup is a great competition because the focus is on developments of the participants,” Obiku noted.

SPDC’s Sustainable Development and Community Relations Manager, Igo Weli, said the sponsors were happy with the progress of the competition so far.
