Don’t You Dare To Change UNILAG’s Name —Gowon Warn Jonathan

A former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, disclosed to grapevine that the Name of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is too important, valuable to be interfered with.

He assured members of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) community that the name of the institution remains sacrosanct and cannot be change.

Speaking on Tuesday in Lagos, during the university’s 2012/2013 Batch A convocation, Gowon said nobody could change the name of the university.

He urged the graduating students to remain committed to the ideals of the school, saying the university, known for excellence, “has come to stay.”

President Goodluck Jonathan, during the 2012 Democracy Day, had renamed the institution after the winner of the 1993 presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Abiola.

The name change attracted criticism and litigation from many stakeholders before a court declared the action illegal.

But addressing the graduating students on Tuesday, Gowon urged them to build on the reputation of the university and maintain its good name.

“No one can change the name of the university. You must improve yourselves to the glory of God, the university and the country at large. Ensure that you build good reputation and maintain the good name of the university,” he said.

He also enjoined them to endeavour to be self-employed, in order to impact on humanity more meaningfully.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahamon Bello, had urged the graduating students to be good ambassadors of the university.

Thirty six out of the 3,264 graduating students passed out with First Class grade.
